Constance

Constance Horsley, known to almost everyone as “Connie,” has been an active member of both congregations over many years. Now retired, she continues to give of her time and talent in many ways. You’ll find her leading the Altar Guild, welcoming guests during the week, lending a hand in the kitchen and pantry ministries, singing in the choir and just about anything else she sees needs to get done! She begins her story as a member of the former Christ Church in East Orange.

In 1971, there was a big snowstorm that did not allow Mom, Teresa and me to attend Sunday service at the parish we attended in Orange. So we walked across the bridge spanning the parkway to come to Christ Church. The Rector, The Rev’d James Waring, was late to celebrate the 10:30 AM Mass. The congregation waited; it was unusual for him not to be at Christ Church: he was always early for worship services and church activities.

When he arrived, he apologized for being late and then welcomed us to the service with his usual big smile! He explained that he was unable to get the car out of the driveway and he walked from the rectory in Glen Ridge!! We were impressed!!!

We began worshiping at Christ Church in 1971 because we felt welcome to this parish. By summer, I was asked to become a Church School Teacher in the fall. I accepted and spent the next ten years teaching at all grade levels. The Rev’d Deacon Kathleen Ballard was our church school superintendent and inspired and encouraged us to be the best as we ministered to our children! I even became the youth group team member along with Harry Wilson, Alvin Wedderburn, and others. We had fun as we not only instructed them but took the teenagers on trips, skating activities and just had a good time.

Currently, I serve as a member of the Choir, Director of the Altar Guild, a member of our Jubilee Outreach Community Center board, and as a member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW). In the past, it was my joy to serve on the vestry where I was also Clerk of the Vestry and, more recently as Senior Warden. Over many years I also served on numerous interim and administrative boards, committees and task forces of the parish. Epiphany and Christ Church is my home and I enjoy serving in whatever way I can. Thanks be to God!
